When planning your housing move, it is essential to plan it well in advance so that you have plenty of time to sort through things and be certain to not leave anything behind. A proper schedule will ensure a smooth and seamless moving experience. Here is how you should plan your move in advance.

Two Months Before:

  • Sort through every item in your home and decide what you will keep, donate or give away.
  • Keep aside fragile items that need special packaging or extra insurance.
  • Start searching for movers and packers company. Make sure you look through their reviews and compare prices.
  • Create a binder where you’ll note down all your moving information like dates, numbers, receipts and inventory.
  • If you have children, arrange to transfer their school records to the new school.

Six Weeks Before:

  • Buy moving supplies such as boxes, bubble wrap, tape, markers, etc.
  • Ensure to start using all the items that you will not need during your move, such as cleaning supplies or frozen food.
  • Measure the rooms of your new home to check if your furniture will fit through the room and designated space.

One Month Before:

  • Choose a moving company and confirm your time, dates, costs and other necessary information.
  • Start packing your things. Begin with items that are not used often, like your waffle maker. Additionally, make a list in your binder of all your valuable belongings over $100.
  • Label and number each box with its designated room and the items stored, making it easier for you to navigate your belongings.
  • Store your most valuable possessions, like jewelry and crucial documents, in a safe box and ensure to transport them personally.
  • Alert the necessary personnel such as the banks, your employer, subscriptions like newspapers and magazines, insurance, credit cards and utility companies about your move.
  • Obtain copies of your medical records or send the necessary information to your new healthcare provider.

Two Weeks Before:

  • Inform your employer that you would take a day off for your house moving.
  • Check the condition of your vehicle and fix it if there are any issues.
  • If you are changing banks, then ensure to clear out your safe deposit box.
  • Recheck and verify your moving arrangements with the movers.

One Week Before:

  • Ensure you order and stock prescription medicines for the next few weeks.
  • Pack your personal items like clothes, shoes, etc.
  • If you are taking your refrigerator, remember to empty it, clean it and defrost it at least 24 hours before your moving day.
